Worms!
Hi all:
Yesterday morning was get-shit-done morning at my house. In between emails, calls, and meetings, Bill and I took the lawn mower out of winter hibernation, mowed the lawn, washed the dusty and dirty window screens, Bill fixed my leaking outdoor water spigot (that happened before I washed the window screens), we swept out the garage, and then Bill had the idea to move the basketball hoop (it’s a stand-up thing) that sits at the top of my driveway so we could clean underneath it. That hoop hasn’t been moved in maybe 15 years. Under its base, there was an entire ecosystem of dirt, small, but strong roots, and so, so many earthworms. It was shocking and also beautiful. All of this was in a maybe, 2 feet x 2 feet square sitting on top of asphalt. Before washing it down, I moved (well, I made Bill move), all of the worms over to the side lawn. In a weird and touching way, seeing this tiny little ecosystem gave me pause and perspective. In this crazy, messed-up country, this bit of earth with its terrestrial invertebrate inhabitants was functioning and flourishing just how it should. No frozen federal funds or anti-Constitutional Executive Orders impacted this tiny square of dirt. Lucky them.
Thanks to the worms for that moment of grace and for helping my garden flourish in this early spring sunshine.
One of our members asked that I share this sweepstakes info with you all. The contest runs May 1-8 and the grand prize is a week-long stay in Paris. Oh, Paris in spring! You can enter here. The funds support an organization called Veggies to Table with the mission of helping to end hunger in Maine.
Rain again this weekend. Hope you find ways to get outside in between the raindrops.
Happy adventuring,
Gillian
